When social distancing became part of our cultural lexicon earlier this year, our outdoor spaces became an invaluable asset in helping maintain some sense of normalcy. Outdoor living and entertaining became a way to safely keep in contact with family and friends, and soaking up the sun was just an added benefit. But as the days of socially distanced get-togethers outdoors are dwindling, it is safe to say that many of us are getting a bit nervous about losing this extra living space.
As the temperatures drop and the leaves fall, many are seeking inspiration for how to keep outdoor areas as viable gathering, dining, and even working spaces. While it may take a little bit of creativity, and a fair amount of blankets, you can turn your outdoors into an extension of your home even during the cooler months. Read one for fall outdoor living space inspiration.
If you are really committed to using your outdoor space all year long, you may want to consider the construction of a screened porch that will provide protection from the elements. If you are not prepared for a full construction project, however, an open gazebo can still help to keep you dry. Add seating and a table, and al fresco dining under the moonlight may become one of your favorite things to do!
Of course, staying warm may be an issue so a fire pit is almost a must-have. You can add a gas or wood-burning firepit or chiminea, a wood-burning stove, or even a propane fire table to add some heat and light to your outdoor living area. You can even add an outdoor heater similar to what restaurants use on their patios if you are really serious (or always cold!). Of course, you will still want to keep some cozy blankets nearby to help keep the chill away.
Along with your blankets, make sure your seating areas are comfortable with cushions and throw pillows, and add a waterproof rug and decorative items to your space to make it truly feel like an extension of your interior home. In addition to the light you may get from a firepit or such, you will also want to include lighting throughout your outdoor space to add to the ambiance. Although be careful not to add too much, as your interior lights will also illuminate the space.
If you are limited on outdoor space, but have a garage you can always turn it into your socially distanced man-cave for the weekend’s football games. Move the cars out and add everything from tables and recliners to a refrigerator and – of course – a television. The garage will help protect you from the elements, and you may even get to know a few more of your neighbors as the pass by while walking the dog!
