As you design your dream home, you want to take into consideration the space you will need so that everyone is comfortable, and how the space works with your lifestyle. The home’s design should fit the needs for each family member and any future additions—including your pets.
Pets are part of the family, and when you’re designing your new home or remodeling, it is helpful to think of your design from your pet’s point of view. Certain design choices and the addition of pet-friendly amenities can enhance your pet’s quality of life while making caretaking just a bit easier for you. Here are a few pet-friendly home trends to include in your dream home.
Whether your pet happens to be a messy eater, or you are just looking for a way to make their food and water bowls slightly less noticeable you will want to include built-in food and water bowls in the design of your home. The bowls can be built into the bottom of a cabinet, in a nook under the island, or even into a drawer for a slideout option. Be sure there is space to store the food, and consider an elevated bowl for your dog to make it more comfortable when it is time to eat.
When choosing a layout for your pet-friendly home, design a space for a pet station that keeps daily care and grooming simple and contained. Typically incorporated into a laundry room or mud room, the pet station can include a pet shower, wash station, automatic feeder, bed, litter box, cabinets for food, treats, and toys, and an exhaust fan to alleviate odors.
While a dedicated pet station will make it easier to keep your furry family members clean, keep in mind that this will also help your house stay cleaner, longer too. Regularly brushing and bathing removes loose hair before it ends up on your floor, your bed, your throw pillows, your curtains and trimmed nails won’t scratch floors or upholstery. Think of it this way: It’s easier to clean your dog than your upholstery, and it’s usually more fun.
A dedicated indoor doggie play room is the perfect pet-friendly home trend that allows your dog to get the stimulation they need without destroying your home. An indoor play space can ensure your furry companion is staying occupied even when you are not there. It can also come in handy when you’re around but unable to give your dog your full attention, such as when you’re working from home.
If you don’t have a whole room to set aside for your pooch, you can use baby gates to create a playzone, but be sure to include a variety of toys so boredom doesn’t set in. You can also include an interactive pet camera so you can check in while you’re away,, or leave the TV and radio on for some company, particularly if your pup is a bit anxious.
Make sure there are plenty of opportunities for your dog to view the beautiful outdoors with ample windows. Windows are important for dogs, especially if they are inside a lot. Looking out the window can help decrease any anxiety, boredom, or negative emotion they may be having, whether that is because they are inside a lot, or it is because of other reasons.
